St. Charles Church
The house of God dedicated to King Carl XI of Sweden is impressive and the largest historicist church made of limestone. Its designer Otto Pius Hippius, an architect from St. Petersburg with his origins in Estonia, wanted that the pulpit and the altar as the centres of the church service were visible from every seat in the church, and everyone there could clearly hear the service. He considered the artistic aspect of the church’s appearance and very good lighting to be of great importance.
St. Charles Church is decorated with sightworthy altar paintings by J. Köler and S. Kügelgen.
The oldest part of the church are the church bells, and in 1884, the biggest mechanical tracture organ with 30 registers was built.
