Leesi St. Catherine’s Church
On the Juminda Peninsula in Lahemaa National Park, Leesi St. Catherine’s Church awaits you – a sanctuary preserving the heritage of the coastal people, sheltered by ancient linden trees. Along with its cemetery, it offers a quiet stop where you can discover the history of the coastal villages. Built between 1865 and 1867 as the successor to the Juminda chapel, the stone church captivates with its simplicity.
Step inside and notice centuries-old details: the pulpit with colorful figures is adorned with early Baroque carvings from the old Harju-Jaani Church, dating from 1646. Your eye will be drawn to the restored glass chandelier and the ancient collection box made from a ship’s mast. In the tower vestibule hangs a three-masted sailing ship model created in the 1920s by Mart Paadimeister – one of the few votive ships preserved in Estonian churches. People donated these ship models to churches as thanks for being saved from distress at sea.
An Evangelical Lutheran congregation is active in the church, and services are held twice a month on Sundays. Combine your church visit with a trip on the Juminda Peninsula and take a moment to enjoy Lahemaa’s peaceful coastal villages.
